Our Voices, Our Stories - Peter*

The right to work is a blessing that many take for granted. How many of us grumble and complain about the work we get to do, so that we can enjoy daily essentials, like food and accommodation?

As an asylum seeker (non-refoulemant claimant) from India, Peter* is not currently permitted to work in Hong Kong. As much as he appreciates the support from the International Social Services (ISS), it is not enough to cover his basic living expenses. Yet, this remarkably resilient man recognises that difficulties are opportunities to develop determination, fortify faith to face uncertainty with dignity and gain valuable experience, all of which enriches his current reality and prepares him for what’s ahead. He sees the support and training he receives via Branches of Hope as an investment, which is positively affecting his confidence while also helping him to establish a solid foundation for a brighter future.

During his time in Hong Kong, Peter never hesitates to accompany some of his friends and neighbours to places like hospitals, immigration offices and the high court, providing moral support as well as practically assisting those who cannot speak or understand English. He shared that helping others makes him feel blessed and more connected. Peter is also proactive in making the best of his situation by trying to learn the local language, reading, playing chess and contributing to his community as he is given opportunity.

Peter trusts that faith can guide him through dark difficulties — turning pain into purpose, and transforming trouble into triumphant testimonies as he continues to bless those around him.
